Halal, Black-Owned Restaurants You Should Be Supporting Year-Round
Black people in America are the most economically-exploited group and have been working for free in virtually every field for the last three centuries and continue to do so today. Under the guise of prison labor, inequitable labor, and decreasing federal budgets to states of significant black populations, black people in America continue to fight to make a living under unfair, racist wages.
Muslims should be supporting Black businesses year-round, not just when the time says to. Black businesses are already at a disadvantage in the eyes of the system, and Muslim owned ones are at a bigger disadvantage, given the added layer of the Muslim identity and marketing as halal.
We can quote hadiths all day long, but as long as our implicit biases and aversive racism towards the black people are present, our efforts to be united in Islam and humanity is counterintuitive (and quite frankly, hypocritical). Black owned businesses have been needing our attention, and it only unfortunate that the wider Muslim community is realizing this now. Fundraising for building new mosques can wait.
